This is the story of a mute girl who gets into UA High by request of her family. She must learn to recognize how she can help people rather than be destructive. Of course, she meets many new friends, rivals, and love interests in her journey in Class 1-A. Despite the romantic undertones, this story is mainly focused on Koto Yamada and how she navigates the class, the heroics scene, and life in general. Muted Voices explores the psyche of a young, damaged girl as she struggles with her mental health. 

Muted Voices is my first story that takes place within the world of My Hero Academia and happens within the canon storyline. It has been writing practice to get used to the process of character creation and plot fabrication.

Cast of Characters

Koto Yamada

Hero Name: Maestro

Gender/Sexuality: Heterosexual Female

Quirk: Illuse (the ability to create any sound she can recall in a different place than her vocal chords)

Birthday: June 28

Appearance: She stands at 5’5, thin, but with dancer’s muscles. Her skin is pale and dotted with freckles, most prominently on her cheeks. She has large, sky blue eyes. Her wild auburn curls lay all the way to her mid-back. She has a scar along her neck that she always covers with her favorite black choker. She wears her mother’s engagement ring on a long silver chain.

Personality: Koto is shy at first before she warms up to people. Generally, situations outside of her comfort zone make her quite anxious, which results in nausea. She’s been trying to get over this through her performances and recitals. When she’s excited, she bounces on her toes. A truly joyful smile from her takes form in a large, wild, toothy grin. She’s not extremely intelligent and mostly acts on instincts. With her quirk, she can easily hide how she’s really feeling. Her tell is in her eyes, but she’s good at hiding it most times.

Important Info: She’s mute and communicates through sign language or her quirk, though she would refuse to use her power for a long time after the death of her parents. She’s a ballerina and practically lives through music. She loves classic rock and everything Disney. Hedgehogs are her favorite animal. She mostly wears pastels. Her style is a loose-fitting top and tight pants with converse. When she wakes up somewhere new, she gets very nauseous

Reina Fujino

Gender/Sexuality: Bisexual Female

Quirk: Enigmapath (the ability to understand any language or code as it is read or spoken)

Birthday: May 29

Appearance: Long, silky black hair with blunt bangs. Her storm grey eyes are accented with wire-rimmed round glasses. She stands at 5’4.

Personality: Reina is a sweetheart to everyone she meets. She’s very outgoing and is the type of person to walk up to a stranger and start a conversation. Her personality is flexible, as she can adapt to the situation and comfort level of those around her. 

Important Info: She loves travelling and meeting new people. Her aesthetic is lime green and dark grey. She has the natural ability to make anyone and everyone feel comfortable around her. Her quirk only works to understand the words that were said/read in the language they were used in. She cannot use words that she hasn’t seen or heard before. Think of it like an empty dictionary in her mind that slowly gets filled in the more she reads or listens. It only takes hearing a word once for her to know how it’s spelt and what its translation is. Similarly, after reading a word once, she knows its meaning and can pronounce it. When using code or sign languages, it’s just understood in her mind and she can now use the codes or the signs in conversation. She plans to work for the government someday. She comes from a large, relatively wealthy family. They’re all extremely close.

Kati Jessop

Gender/Sexuality: Heterosexual Female

Quirk: Wind (the ability to manipulate the air around her and create wind)

Birthday: October 11

Appearance: She has long(ish) sandy blonde hair and big, chocolate brown eyes, framed with long lashes. She usually has her nails painted lavender, the color incorporated into most of her clothes as well. She can be described as “petite.”

Personality: Kati is constantly worried about others’ opinions of her. She’s relatively fun-loving, but hates feeling like she constantly has to prove that she’s fun. She’s quite paranoid about people hating her. She can certainly hold a grudge if someone wronged her. She hates thinking back to her childhood, considering she did some embarrassing things and was bullied for quite a while. She’s also very ambitious

Important Info: Her and Koto never got along in school. She loves Disney movies as well, mostly the princess ones. She is planning to pursue a STEM degree, hoping to make a change in the world of technology

Likes: Disney, lavender, skittles, softball

Dislikes: Ventriloquists(phobia), pranks

Macy Dawson

Gender/Sexuality: Heterosexual Transgender Female (amab)

Quirk: Hair Cartridge (the ability to change her own hair color at will and dispense the color onto others’. The more she uses her quirk, the straighter it makes her hair. If she changes hair color every day for a week, her hair will be straight and glossy. If she doesn't use her quirk for a week, her hair will be tight coils)

Birthday: February 3

Appearance: Macy has long, wavy hair(since she uses her quirk to change the color relatively frequently). It’s naturally black, but she can change it at will. She has tan skin and light teal eyes, the color of a field covered in dew. She is 5’10

Personality: She becomes slightly anxious in social situations, seen in the way she brushes her hair with her hands. She’s very tuned into others’ love lives and frequently teases them or is willing to get involved. She is a step closer towards the popular crowd than the rest of her friend group, which has been helping her social anxiety ease up a bit.

Important Info: Macy owns a horse that she loves to pieces. She has a very kind heart. She frequently volunteers to dye her classmates’ hair. She plans to be a hairdresser when she grows up.

Likes: Horses, red, hairdressing, playing matchmaker

Dislikes: Strangers, being looked down on

Jupiter Smith

Hero Name: Nightwing

Gender/Sexuality: Heterosexual Male

Quirk: Lunar Angel (Giving him invisible eagle wings that can only be seen in the moonlight)

Birthday: June 21

Appearance: Jupiter stands at 6’4 and is relatively lanky. He has dusty brown hair and green-hazel eyes

Personality: He has the ultimate big bro energy. He’s very theatrical and goofy, but can be serious when the need arises. He’s serious about hero work and is confident in his abilities, knowing he has to be or else he’ll be at a disadvantage. He has a wisdom beyond his years that he hides with a smile. He’s quite gregarious and can make friends with just about anyone. He’s very good with adults and elders, very personable

Important Info: He plays the guitar. He’s the definition of a morning person, always getting up early to go for a run. He doesn’t own a car because the seats cramp his wings, so he either flies or bikes wherever he needs to go. He learned to sew to patch up his hero costume and is quite handy with a needle and thread

Likes: Making people smile, chocolate ice cream, music, Batman

Dislikes: Show-offs, invasions of personal space
